Pakistan vs New Zealand, 2nd Test, Day 1 at Dubai - As it Happened

Pakistan now have the task of batting under some pressure. They have never batted second in the last three Tests. They have a new opening pair as well and they are sure to be tested by Southee and Boult early on. Tom Latham was the spark of the New Zealand innings with his second century in this series. New Zealand's slow innings finally comes to an end. The tail wagged for them and they have taken the Kiwis past 400 which is a very good effort considering the batting form the Pakistanis have been in of late. Babar took a four-wicket haul and all the others chipped in with a wicket or more.

OUT! Rahat takes a catch this time! Tossed up on middle, Boult decides to attack this time. He charges down the wicket and goes for the big shot. He doesn't time it that well as the ball goes high up in the air. Rahat Ali at wide deep mid-wicket gets under the ball and takes a safe catch. Another good session for Pakistan! There was some partnership going on for the Kiwis as Craig and Watling added a 68-run stand between them. But Azhar Ali removed Watling to break the partnership and then Craig was out soon as well. Just two wickets fell in the session as New Zealand are crawling here. Pakistan would look to grab the remaining two wickets as soon as possible in the final session whereas Sodhi and Southee would look to hang in there as much as possible. A good first session for Pakistan. They finally roar back into the game by picking up three wickets. They managed to dismiss both the overnight batsmen very early in the morning. Watling and Neesham showed some fight but couldn't carry their partnership for long. Neesham threw away his wicket to Yasir Shah. Craig was also dropped by Rahat Ali after that and if that opportunity was taken, Pakistan would have been in a stronger position now. The Kiwis will hope that this partnership lasts long and take them close to 400. On the other side, Pakistan will hope and pick up the remaining wickets as early as possible. Hello and welcome to the second day of the second test between Pakistan and New Zealand. After the loss in Abu Dhabi the visitors looked strong through the day 1 of this Test. They just lost three wickets and scored 243 runs. Tom Latham went on to score his second century of the series and is still not out. The Kiwis will be looking to score big in this innings and create a strong position in this match. On the other end, Pakistan will hope to dismiss them as early as possible before the game starts slipping away from their hand.

Another impressive knock by Latham! He has shown good skills to survive in the subcontinent conditions. Needs to carry on and make this innings count with a big century. Full length ball on middle, Latham flicks it wide of mid on and takes a couple of runs.

Day 1, second session...

New Zealand have most of their victory at the toss. They elected to bat and their openers, McCullum and Latham got off to a fine start. They saw off the new ball and McCullum mixed aggression with some watchful cricket to lay a solid foundation for the rest of the line-up. Close to the end of the session, McCullum lost his cool and holed out in the deep. The Pakistani spinners did ask a few questions but the pitch is very good to bat on. OUT! Rush of blood for McCullum and he has thrown his wicket away! Back of a length on off stump, McCullum rocks back to pull and doesn't get hold of it as much as he would have loved to. There is a deep mid-wicket in place and the ball goes bull's eye to Masood over there who takes a simple catch. Baz goes back for 43, makes waste of a very good start. Adil has been rewarded with a wicket for his hard work, but the ball wasn't the best.

An absence of the edge would have caused troubles for McCullum. The ball had hit the pad first, as shown by further replays. Hawk Eye shows that this would have been out.

The Pakistanis go up right away but the umpire is not shaken and doesn't give it out. Misbah speaks to Ehsan Adil and Sarfraz Ahmed, the keeper and takes the review. Replays show that there was no inside edge and Hawk Eye suggests that the ball would have just touched the bails over middle stump. Latham must have had his heart in his mouth but is safe.

An appeal against Latham for an lbw has been turned down here. Misbah has a word with his bowler and the keeper and takes the review.

New Zealand have talked about improving all the aspects of their game. They have been training hard and are known to be fighters. In the last Test, they couldn't put up much of a fight but there were some inspiring individual performances that they can build on going further.
