Afridi has been slammed for his leadership during World T20
Hours after Shahid Afridi announced that he is stepping down as the Twenty20 skipper, Sri Lankan cricket legend Kumar Sangakkara said it is up to the Pakistan Cricket Board to decide how to fit in the veteran all-rounder. On Sunday, the maverick Afridi took to Twitter to announce he was stepping down as captain but wanted to continue playing for his country. Afridi had previously said that he is likely to retire after the World T20 but went back on his decision.
"He (Afridi) would have looked at himself and thought this was the right time to go. How Pakistan use that, I am not sure. I hate talking about what other countries should do and how they should play their cricket," Sangakkara told NDTV. (Pakistan Cricket Board's Fact-Finding Committee Recommends to Sack Waqar Younis and Shahid Afridi)
"But the Paksitan management will sit down and think long and hard about how Afridi fits in their future plans. If he doesn't, they might not go down the line to pick him... if he does, then he can still be a crucial part of the side." (Shahid Afridi Steps Down as Pakistan T20 Captain, Will Continue Playing)
Pakistan had a dismal outing at the World T20. They only defeated Bangladesh in the group stages before going on to lose to arch-rivals India, New Zealand and Australia; failing to qualify for the semifinals.
Many former greats of the game also criticised the way the 36-year-old Afridi captained his side.
