Karachi:
Mohsin said Yousuf, who averaged 42 in 282 ODIs for Pakistan, still had a key role to play in the limited overs format.
"Yousuf showed on his return to Test cricket at The Oval what a classy player he is. I have been saying he still has two to three years of cricket left in him. I also see a role for him in the one-day squad, specially with the 2011 World Cup in mind," Mohsin said.
"He can play an important part in the one-day team and he can guide the younger players. In recent times most countries have relied on senior players in their one-day squad," he said.
The chief selector will leave for England soon to witness the Lords Test and also finalise the ODI squad in consultation with the team management.
Mohsin and ODI captain Shahid Afridi are also due to meet with PCB chief Ejaz Butt tomorrow and on Tuesday and indications are that the meetings would decide on the future of another former skipper Younis Khan.
Mohsin pointed out that Pakistan had some crunch series coming up against South Africa and New Zealand before the World Cup.
"So it is a good opportunity for us to give continued exposure to back up players and also utilise the seniors as well," he said.
The former Test opener said he sees Yousuf in the role of an anchor in Pakistan's batting line-up.
"In ODI matches you need to bat out 50 overs. You need players who can bat 30-40 overs and provide the backbone for the lineup and for other players to play around. Yousuf can play this role for Pakistan in ODI cricket," Mohsin said.
Mohsin also said that while he was happy that the team had won the Oval Test but felt there were still grey areas the players need to work upon.
"Our batsmen need to learn to put a value on their wickets. They must learn not to waste away positions of strengths in a Test match. Top teams always grind down the opposition and we, in contrast, in recent times have given away matches to the opposition from winning positions," he stated.
