James Faulkner became the sixth Australian to take an ODI hattrick as Sri Lanka scored 288 in the second international match in Colombo on Wednesday. However, the 26-year-old all-rounder's heroic feat went in vain as the visitors lost the match by 82 runs.
Faulkner's hattrick was spread over two overs. Kusal Perera was LBW for 54 trying a reverse sweep on the last ball of the 46th over. Angelo Mathews and Thisara Perera were Faulkner's victims with his first and second ball of the 48th over of the Sri Lankan innings
An IPL veteran, Faulkner's medium pace with full of cutters, worked well for the Australians who rocked the Lankans with two quick wickets. Faulkner became the first Australian to take an ODI hattrick since Clint Mckay in 2013.
Sri Lanka recovered well from 12 for two wickets thanks to fifties by Kusal Perera, Mathews and Kusal Mendis.
Faulkner, whose 4-38 in the first one-dayer earned him the man-of-the-match award and helped Australia take a 1-0 lead in the five-match series, finished with figures of 3-45.
