Glenn Maxwell has been left out of the Australia squad for the upcoming five-match ODI series against Sri Lanka starting on August 21. The dashing right-hander has been omitted along with Travis Head and Scott Boland.
Maxwell has endured a torrid time in 2016, performing poorly in the Chappell-Hadlee series against New Zealand and in the Tri-Series in the West Indies. Maxwell averaged just two from three games while in the Caribbean, he managed only 53 runs in five games at an average of just over 17.
Boland, who made his debut in the India series at the start of 2016, has not had a good start to his international career, managing just seven wickets from eight ODI games.
Speaking about the selection, National Selector Rod Marsh said Maxwell's poor form did not warrant his selection. "We've asked Glenn to go away and focus on consistent performances for Victoria and Australia A to earn his way back into the Australian side."
Australia's A side are currently playing two unofficial Tests against South Africa A and they will be involved in a Tri-series also featuring India A in August.
Australia will play five ODIs and two Twenty20 Internationals against Sri Lanka. The first two matches will be held at the R Premadasa stadium while the next two ODIs will be held at Rangiri Dambulla International Cricket stadium. The final match will be played at Pallekele and the tour will round off with two Twenty20 Internationals at Colombo.
Steven Smith's side, who are the No.1 ranked side in both Tests and ODIs, are facing an uphill task after suffering their first Test loss to Sri Lanka after 17 years. The second Test begins in Galle on August 4.
