Jamaica Tallawahs rode a fine stand between Shakib Al Hasan and Chris Gayle to romp home by five wickets against Guyana Amazon Warriors in a Caribbean Premier League match in Kingston on Friday.
Chasing Warriors 128 for six, Jamaica Tallawahs overcame a horrifying start to win by 25 balls to spare at Sabina Park. Jamaica lost four wickets for two runs but Shakib (53 not out) and Gayle (45 not out) used their T20 experience to bail out their team.
Gayle was not allowed to open the batting due to leaving the field with a back injury. Gayle had to wait to bat as he watched helplessly as his top order collapsed. Gayle needed to sit out 18 minutes of the Tallawahs innings, few would have expected them to be this eventful.
Andre Russell took the attack to the Amazon Warriors on his way to a 15-ball 24. He departed to a superb catch from Adam Zampa at square leg and finally Gayle walked to the crease with the score at 45 for 5.
Gayle attacked from the start and his first two scoring shots were massive sixes. Gayle's 87-run stand with Shakib saw Jamaica Tallawahs home.
