The Board of Control for Cricket in India is mulling the start of a mini version of the Indian Premier League in September this year. The tournament will be played overseas.
BCCI president Anurag Thakur said the dates and format of the mini IPL will be announced later. All eight IPL teams are expected to participate in a two-three week long championship.
"In the month of September, the BCCI is willing to host a mini IPL or IPL overseas with all the eight teams participating," BCCI president Anurag Thakur said at the conclusion of the Board's Working Committee meeting here.
"It will be a shorter format, not home and away matches but a lesser number of matches. In a two-week window we should be able to complete it," he said.
The mini-IPL will be played in the same time slot that was reserved for the Champions League T20, which used to involve the top T20 teams from South Africa, Australia, England and India.
The Champions League T20 was shelved due to the lack of interest and sponsorship. The last and sixth edition was played in 2014.
