Alastair Cook achieved a fabulous milestone as he broke Sachin Tendulkar's record and became the youngest to reach 10,000 runs in Tests on the fourth day of the second Test against Sri Lanka in Durham.
The England skipper achieved the land-mark in the second over of England's chase when he flicked Nuwan Pradeep to the deep mid wicket fence for a boundary.
Cook became the first England player to reach the landmark of 10,000 runs and he also became the youngest at 31 years and 158 days to achieve the landmark. Tendulkar was 31 years and 326 days old when he reached the landmark against Pakistan at Eden Gardens in 2005.
The England skipper became the 12th batsman overall to reach the milestone and he achieved it in his 128th Test.
Cook finally achieved the milestone in his third attempt. Heading into the series against Sri Lanka, the England skipper needed 36 runs to get to the landmark. In the first Test at Leeds, Cook scored just 16 while in the first innings in Durham, he managed just 15 runs.
The England skipper came good in the second innings and scored an unbeaten 47. In the process, he went past Michael Atherton's mark of most runs as Test skipper for England. The hosts registered a nine-wicket win to take an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match series, thus making it a good day in the office for Cook.
