Inzamam-ul-Haq, Pakistan's former captain, has asked for more time for him to take a decision on the chief selector's position offered to him by Pakistan Cricket Board. (Inzamam-ul-Haq Likely To Become Pakistan Chief Selector)
An official in the Board confirmed to PTI that PCB Chairman Shahryar Khan had invited Inzamam to his residence and had a detailed meeting with him.
"Shaharyar has offered Inzamam the chief selector's position and also agreed to some points raised by the former captain who is now head coach of the Afghanistan team," the official said.
He said Shahryar had agreed to give Inzamam considerable authority and also assured him of a suitable financial package since the former batsman is presently paid around USD 12,000 by the Afghanistan Cricket Board.
The official said Inzamam had told the PCB chief he had a contract with the Afghanistan Board until December this year.
"He has also asked for time so that he can speak to the Afghanistan cricket officials and reach an amicable agreement with them as he does not want to leave them in acrimonious circumstances," the official said.
Inzamam, who is Pakistan's most capped player with 120 Tests and 398 ODIs, joined Afghanistan as their head coach last year and along with former Indian pacer Manoj Prabhakar has managed to produce some decent results with them.
In the past also, talks between Inzamam and the Board fell through over issues of authority and financial remunerations when the former captain was in the run for a coaching and batting consultant's position with the national team.
The PCB is on the hunt for a new head coach after Waqar Younis stepped down before his contract expires in May after Pakistan's dismal performances in recent months.
Waqar also offered his support to Inzamam and termed him as a good choice by the PCB.
In a series of tweets, Waqar, who is in India for the IPL, said he had recommended to the PCB last year to sign on Inzamam in a bid to improve the game in the country following the 2015 World Cup.
"Hearing Inzamam coming as chief selector. V good news. Glad PCB now listening to my 2015 recommendations. #BetterLateThanNever," Waqar tweeted.
Waqar also cautioned the PCB against appointing an interim coach before the tour to England this summer.
