He will probably have his plate full when India take on Australia in a series of limited overs matches Down Under.
In poor form during the four-match Test series against South Africa at home, Rohit Sharma, though, will be keeping a keen eye on the BCCI selection committee meet on Saturday where the India squad for the Australia tour will be named. India will play five ODIs and three Twenty20 Internationals between January 12 and 31.
Rohit, The One-Day Specialist
Rohit has come under heavy criticism for his performance during the recently-concluded India vs South Africa Test series. The middle-order bat managed just 26 runs in two matches (4 innings) with his place in the Test squad being questioned by many quarters.
However, Rohit is in a purple patch in the limited overs format and would be an automatic selection for the Australia tour.
The stylish right-hander was the highest Indian run-getter in the ODI series at home against the Proteas, scoring 255 runs in five matches at an average of 51 and strike-rate of 99.60. He was usurped only by a marauding AB de Villiers, Faf du Plessis and Quinton de Kock in the overall list.
Rohit Down Under
Rohit's prowess in handling the Australian attack will also work in his favour. In 30 matches (Tests, ODIs and T20s), he has scored 1138 runs against the Aussies at an average of 43.76 with three centuries to his name.
His one-day record is even better -- in 18 matches, Rohit has smashed 856 runs at an average of 57.06, including a memorable double hundred.
In Australian conditions, however, Rohit's numbers dip a little. In 11 ODIs Down Under, he has scored 364 runs at an average of 36.40 while in three T20s, he has managed just eight runs.
His Test spot might be up for grabs but whatever said and done, Rohit will be key to India's performance in Australia. If he fails up top and with his opening partner Shikhar Dhawan struggling for runs, India in could be in for a long Australian summer.
