Perth Scorchers' Mitchell Marsh not just stopped Lahore Lions from making it to the semifinals of the Champions League Twenty20 with a three-wicket win in their last group match here on Tuesday but also paved the way for Chennai Super Kings' entry into the last-four stage.
Marsh scored an unbeaten 63 off just 38 balls with the help of seven boundaries and three sixes, besides putting up a crucial unbroken 68 runs with Brad Hogg (28 no; 19b 2X4 2X6)) to overhaul a modest target of 125 with six balls to spare at the Chinnaswamy stadium here.

Mitchell Marsh is named the Man of the Match for his match-winning knock along with the two wickets he had picked up in the first innings. The next game is a dead rubber between Barbados Tridents and Northern Knights. Switch over to the coverage of that game in a bit.
Just when you thought that Lions would pack the Scorchers up inside 79, skipper Marsh and Hogg got together and played some watchful cricket. They then started hitting the spinners as well as Riaz and finished the game off with six balls to spare. Hogg showed his experience while Marsh showed his talent once again.
It was a complete swan-song, this innings. Lahore Lions needed to restrict Lions under 79 runs to qualify for the semis. They looked en route for that as they picked up early wickets at regular intervals. The spinners applied the brakes on the scoring and the Scorchers top order were left clueless against the turning ball.
SIX! That's a maximum to finish the game, clean as a whistle! Pitched up outside off, Marsh sends this packing over long off with another straight bat six. Second time in the tournament that he has finished a game off victoriously with two back to back sixes.
SIX! That is a mighty! Fullish on middle, Marsh gets under this one with a straight bat and effortlessly lofts the ball deep over long on. The scores are level.

SIX! Hogg has laid into this one! Short but slow on off, Hogg rocks back and pulls the ball disdainfully over the mid-wicket fence, his second six.

He runs late and the throw comes in to Nasim who gathers the ball and takes the bails off. This is an important wicket against the run of play.
FOUR! On the other side of the field now! Full toss on the pads, flicked right off the meat through mid-wicket for a boundary.
FOUR! Crunching timing! Flighted outside off, Marsh gets his bat down nicely and times his drive with perfection through extra cover for a boundary.

The ball skids through and goes under the bat to part the stumps. Hafeez leaps with joy, half of Scorchers batting line up has been mopped by the Lions.

Cartwright is very lucky here! Floated up on off, Cartwright looks to use his feet and then flick. He gets an inside edge on to his pads. The ball dies down on the crease. Akmal comes forward, takes the ball and back flicks it past the stumps. A single is taken thereafter.
Flat and spinning in towards the pads, Cartwright misses the flick yet again. They just can't play spin.

Tossed up on off, driven back to Iqbal who makes a half stop and hurries Cartwright back inside the line at the non-striker's end.

OUT! Right through the gates, Iqbal has his second win! Flighted on off, Bancroft looks to flick the ball through the leg side, expecting the ball to spin away. The ball goes on with the arm, through bat and pad and finds the stumps. Perth Scorchers are messing up the chase and giving lots of hopes to the Lions who need to bowl them out before 79 runs.

OUT! One more bites the dust, bad intentions from Turner! Iqbal flights the ball outside off stump, Turner looks to hoick the ball over the leg side and gets it high up in the air off the outside half of his bat. The ball goes up towards cover, Riaz runs to his left and takes a very good catch, he is pumped up. Lions claw further into the middle order.

FOUR! Well, if you bowl short to Western Australians, they will crack the ball! Banged in short on middle and leg, pulled away to the long leg fence. These batsmen are mostly brought up at the WACA, in Perth.
WIDE! Shortish and down the leg side, it's a wide.
FOUR! Just over the umpire's head! Bancroft blasts a full delivery straight back to the fence, down the ground. The bat turned in his hand on impact but the direction was good.

Back of a length on middle and leg, Whiteman looks to clip the ball through mid-wicket but gets a nasty leading edge that lobs away to Raza at mid on. Perth Scorchers are in some early trouble. A small ray of hope arises among the Lions boys and Chennai will be biting their nails too.

Hafeez has a word with the umpire, he is seemingly unhappy. The first dismissal was off the pad which was given out but the second one was off the bat. Two mistakes by the umpire in this over.

This is strange! NOT OUT! Hafeez slants a flat delivery on middle, Whiteman seems to have got an inside edge away to short leg where Siddiq takes another catch. The Lions fielders go up immediately and very confidently. The umpire goes to the Billy Bowden, the square leg umpire which is strange in itself. Bowden isn't sure either, Rod Tucker the main umpire says that he hasn't seen it clearly. No referral to the third umpire. Replays show that this was clearly off the bat. This is very rough on the Lions. Seems like Hafeez came right in front of the umpire's eyeline on his follow-through.
An appeal straightaway for a catch, the Lions go up and the umpire goes to the square leg umpire to have a word, this is strange, why is he doing this?
In walks Sam Whiteman to bat at number three. Now, there is a silly point as well.
OUT! Hafeez strikes, Simmons goes for a golden duck! Flighted on middle, Simmons looks to work this into the leg side and gets an inside edge on to his pads. The ball then goes to a deepish short leg who is placed in this attacking field set by Hafeez. The catch is easily taken by Siddiq and Lions strikes early. Simmons doesn't look happy with the decision.
