Alastair Cook has admitted that he could step down as England's ODI skipper after the end of the ongoing 5-match series against Australia. After England ended a miserable Ashes series being whitewashed 5-0, the Three Lions lost the ODI series as Australia won the third ODI by 7 wickets at Sydney on Sunday to take an unassailable 3-0 lead.
"I think English cricket needs a little bit of a change," Cook said in the post-match press conference at the Sydney Cricket Ground. "We'll talk over a lot of things. I think there will be some changes. We have kept losing games of cricket and I haven't been able to turn it around," he said.
Crushing defeats in Australia - eight international games in a row - have taken their toll on Cook and the left-hander admitted that losing the one-day series so emphatically has caused him to think again.
When asked whether he wanted to continue as one-day skipper he said: "I don't really want to get dragged into my position. I think it's been two weeks since someone asked me that question - it's been a long two weeks."
Cook, on the other hand remains adamant that he has the responsibility to turn things around in the remaining two matches and salvage a win to stop Australia make it 10-0 against them.
"I've got a job to try and turn this around - try and win one of these games. That's the task at hand."
"I'm competitive. I want to leave everything out on the pitch. We'll deserve the stick we get because we haven't won games of cricket. Simple deal," he said.
