BCCI probe panel 'illegal, unconstitutional' says Bombay High Court
The two retired judges who conducted the probe said in their report that there was no evidence against Mr Meiyappan, Rajasthan Royals co-owner Raj Kundra and the Chennai IPL franchise.
The Indian Cricket Board's probe panel into allegations of spot-fixing in the Indian Premier League (IPL) is "illegal and unconstitutional", the Bombay High Court today said.
The court on Tuesday directed the BCCI or Board for Control of Cricket in India, to form a new panel. This comes as a huge blow to N Srinivasan, who was banking on the probe panel's "clean chit" to his son-in-law Gurunath Meiyappan to make a comeback as BCCI president, a post he was forced to relinquish temporarily in June. The two retired judges who conducted the probe said in their report that there was no evidence against Mr Meiyappan, Rajasthan Royals co-owner Raj Kundra and the Chennai IPL franchise. But their findings were contested by the Mumbai police, who said their inputs were not included in the report. (Related read: BCCI's hasty probe comes under attack)
The court's ruling means that Mr Srinivasan may not be able to attend the Friday meeting of the BCCI working committee, its top decision making body. The BCCI had said the probe panel's clean chit means Mr Srinivasan can resume charge.
