New Zealand all-rounder Corey Anderson has been ruled out of the remainder of the tour of England with a back injury, team management announced Friday.

The 24-year-old suffered a stress-related injury to his back during the first Test at Lord's and will now return home.

Anderson missed New Zealand's series-levelling win in the second Test at Headingley and didn't feature in England's 210-run win in the first one-day international at Edgbaston on Tuesday.

The announcement that the Northern Districts paceman and hard-hitting batsman would miss the rest of the tour came as New Zealand faced England in the second of a five-match ODI series at The Oval on Friday.

Anderson was sent for an MRI scan which revealed a new bone stress-related injury to his spine and now faces further tests.

"Corey has been working hard to get back to full fitness for the ODI series but he hasn't been able to overcome this injury," said New Zealand coach Mike Hesson in a statement.

"We felt the best course of action was to send him back to New Zealand for further assessment."

New Zealand have yet to name a replacement.
