Set a target of 412 to win, the Australian batsmen failed to put up a fight and allowed England to register a 169-run win in the first Ashes Test on Saturday. Here are the highlights from Day 4's play at Cardiff. (SCORECARD | SCHEDULE)
The task for Australia was always going to be difficult. The most any side made to win an Ashes Test was Australia's 404 for three against England at Headingley back in 1948 when Arthur Morris scored 182 and Donald Bradman an unbeaten 173. At Cardiff on Saturday, David Warner hit 52 and Mitchell Johnson later smashed 77 but it came to a naught. Stuart Broad and Moeen Ali shared three apiece to leave the tourists floundering.

That brings an end to the presentation ceremony. Will the Aussies come back hard or will the Brits continue their winning momentum? Join us back to find that out for the second Test at the Mecca of cricket, Lord's on 16th July, 3.30 pm (IST). Until then, it's goodbye and goodnight. Have a great weekend!
Man of the Match - Joe Root for his century in the first innings and then picking up two wickets towards the end. He said it was nice to pick up wickets for his side as his team performed extremely well. he his happy as his team is first up in an Ashes series and they needed to put the marker down. He said hopefully they will back it up at Lord's. Everyone are quite vulnerable early on in the innings and he got lucky. He concluded it with saying, thankfully it was his day and his game and he managed to cash in.
The highlight of this match will be Joe Root and Gary Ballance's partnership in the first innings that guided England and set this match up. Moeen Ali's all-round performance with both bat and the ball showed how important his presence is for his team. Australia will have some serious homework to do now when these two clash again for the second Test. Presentation coming up shortly.
Australia were clear favorites before coming into this game and well, it has to be said, they didn't even play anywhere near to their best. They will be very disappointed with that performance, they didn't bat well to their potential in the first innings nor in the second. They got starts but their batsmen couldn't convert those starts into big ones and were bowled out with a day to spare.
That's it, this brings us to the end of an action filled Test match. A comprehensive win for England and a much needed one as well. They were spot on right throughout, they batted well, fielded well and bowled extremely well to draw the first blood at Cardiff and lead the series 1-0.
OUT! That's the end of this match. Loopy ball around off, Josh came down the track to loft it over the covers, the ball went high up in the air, Root came running forward from long off and took it easily. He threw the ball high up in the air and England are delighted. They have defeated the Aussies by 169 runs.
Darted on middle, Josh bunts it back to the bowler.
