Openers Shikhar Dhawan (107) and Murali Vijay (105) slammed tons and helped India post 347 for 6 against Afghanistan at stumps on Day 1 of the one-off Test in Bengaluru on Thursday. KL Rahul (54) too chipped in, stitching second 100-run partnership of the match with Murali Vijay. Apart from the top three, Indian middle order looked rusty and disappointed with the bat. For Afghanistan, the opening two sessions went pretty bad but the visitors bounced back in the final session, claiming crucial wickets at regular intervals.
After winning the toss, stand-in skipper Ajinkya Rahane opted to bat first. Dhawan and Vijay provided the team a flying start scoring 100 runs in 19.4 overs. Dhawan went on to complete his seventh century in the 26th over, becoming the first Indian to score a ton before lunch on Day 1 of a Test match. Post Dhawan's departure, Vijay took matter into his own hands and played responsibly along with Rahul. The post lunch session was interrupted by rain which led to an early tea. Another rain interruption caused a lapse in concentration and the opening duo departed in quick succession. Rahane (10) and Pujara (35) tried to consolidate but gave away wickets after initial starts. Wicket-keeper Dinesh Karthik was the final wicket to fall on the opening day for India, run-out for a paltry 4 runs.
For Afghanistan, the rain breaks helped the team after a poor showing in the first two sessions. With the ball getting old, both Wafadar and Yamin Ahmadzai got the ball to reverse. Spinner Rashid Khan and Mujeeb too got back in form and created pressure on the Indian batsman. Ahmadzai emerged as the most successful bowler for Afghanistan on Day 1, clinching 2 wickets while Wafadar, Rashid and Mujeeb chipped in with a wicket each. (SCORECARD)

India will look on to pounce on the brilliant start while Afghanistan team will be eager to get their first breakthrough.Â

Shikhar Dhawan has played blockbuster of a knock, batting on 104 alongside Murli Vijay (41) who has played a brilliant supporting role at the other end. Apart from a close call off Wafadar's bowling at the start, Dhawan has looked phenomenal at the center. Dashing southpaw reached his seventh ton in mere 87 balls clobbering 19 boundaries and three sixes so far. It has been a perfect start for India in their season opener. As far as Afghanistan are concerned, skipper Asghar Stanikzai has to come up with different strategy as spin-heavy Afghan side are currently struggling to create an impact on the match. Both Dhawan and Vijay have played the Afghan spin-trio of Rashid, Mujeed and Nabi with ease. Five bowlers used by the skipper have failed to deliver till now.Â

11:15 IST : 15 minutes to go for Lunch! Dhawan is batting on 82. Can he reach the three figure mark before lunch? Although there is no hurry but the way Dhawan has been striking the ball since morning, it seems to be a possible task. IND 124-0 after 22 overs.Â
11:07 IST : First review from Afghanistan and Dhawan survives! Huge appeal from Rashid Khan as the final ball of the over traps Dhawan in front of the stumps. Replay shows that the ball was going over the stumps. On-field umpire Chris Gaffaney decision stays. IND 109-0 after 20 overs.Â

IND 62-0 after 13 overs.Â
10:25 IST : Fifty up on the board for India! Dhawan and Vijay collect 12 runs in the 11th over to take the team's total fifty. IND 54-0 after 11 overs.

09:57 IST : After the end of five overs India are 18 without loss. There hasn't been much of a movement off the seam in the first five overs. Both Yamin and Wafadar have bowled decently, occasionally drifting down the leg side. Indian openers have been watchful and have played the ball according to the merit. IND 18-0 after 5 overs
09:43Â IST : Couple of boundaries to end the second over. Dhawan slams two boundaries off Wafadar towards cover region in the second over. IND 10-0 after 2 overs.Â
09:40 IST : Decent start from Afghanistan. Just a couple of singles in the first over. c Ahmadzai has bowled with a decent line and length. However his speed has only been in the mid 120's. IND 2-0 after 1 over.Â

08:45 IST : Hello and welcome to the live blog of Day 1 of the one-off Test between India and Afghanistan straight from M Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bengaluru.
Having won all their last six Test series at home in the previous season, the Indians are expected to sail through easily as they aim to start the season on a high and take the confidence to the five-Test rubber in England. With a spin-heavy squad, the Afghans may be surely aiming for a fairy tale start to their Test journey as skipper Asghar Stanikzai also backed his spinners being better than the home trio of Ashwin, Jadeja and Kuldeep. In reality, the Indians have been more or less comfortable against the slower bowlers in the previous season barring the first Test against Australia in Pune last year. Afghanistan, on the other hand, won't find the going too easy against the seasoned Indian campaigners. While the star-studded bowling line-up has hogged most of the limelight, the Afghans would expect their batsmen to contribute equally if they hope for a dream start to their Test journey.
