# Ben Hilfenhaus (5/75) has produced his career-best bowling performance - his first five-wicket haul in Tests, obliterating the 4 for 57 against India at Mohali in October 2010.
# Hilfenhaus is the fourth Australian bowler after Graham McKenzie, Bruce Reid (twice) and Brett Lee to take five wickets or more in an innings against India at MCG.
# Graham McKenzie's figures of 7 for 66 in India's first innings total of 173 in 1967-68 are the best by an Australian bowler against India at MCG.
# VVS Laxman continues his poor record at MCG. He is yet to post a fifty at this venue in seven innings, aggregating 113 runs at an average of 16.14, with 42 in December 2007 as his highest score.
# Laxman is averaging 43.79 overseas as compared to his home average of 51.60 in Tests.
# In his last six innings away from home, Laxman's sequence of scores being 4, 30, 2, 2, 24 & 2.
# However, Laxman's best three innings away from home have been recorded against Australia - 178 at Sydney in January 2004, 167 at Sydney in January 2000 and 148 at Adelaide in December 2003.
# Ravichandran Ashwin (31) has registered his second highest innings in Tests, next only to the 103 against West Indies at Mumbai last month.
# Ashwin's innings is the third highest by an Indian number nine batsman at MCG - the top two being 67 not out by Kiran More in December 1991 and Syed Kirmani's 35 in December 1985.
# Brad Haddin has effected five dismissals in an innings three times in Tests - once each against India, South Africa and Pakistan.
# Haddin has completed his 150 dismissals (151) in 40 Tests - 147 catches + 4 stumpings.
# Haddin is the second Australian wicketkeeper after Rodney Marsh (Sydney in January 1981) to effect five dismissals in a Test innings against India.
# Mahendra Singh Dhoni is the only Indian wicketkeeper to accomplish the aforesaid feat against Australia - Perth in January 2008.
# Peter Siddle (3/63) has produced his best bowling performance against India, bettering the 3 for 114 at Mohali in October 2008.
# David Warner, thanks to an unbeaten 123 against New Zealand at Hobart in December this year, had an average of 76.50 before the start of the Melbourne Test. His average fell to 48.75 after his two innings in the first Test of the present series.
# Warner's strike rate of 18.51 (5 off 27 balls) is his worst in a Test innings.
# For the first time, Umesh Yadav has captured the first three wickets to fall in each innings of a Test match - Warner, Marsh and Ponting in the first innings followed by Warner, Cowan and Marsh in the second.

# Ponting's aggregate of 1338 in 15 Tests at MCG at an average of 58.17 is now the second highest at this venue, next only to Sir Donald Bradman - 1671 (ave.128.53) in 11 Tests, including nine hundreds and three fifties.
# Ponting, for the first time, has registered four fifties in succession against India - 77 & 72 at Bangalore in October last year and 62 & 60 at MCG.

# During the course of his aforesaid knock, Hussey has completed his 3,000 runs in Tests in Australia - 3053 at an average of 59.86 in 36 Tests. He is the 12th batsman to complete 3,000 runs or more in Tests in Australia. Ricky Ponting heads the table with 7124 runs (ave.56.99) in 86 Tests.
# Mahendra Singh Dhoni has become the first captain-cum-wicketkeeper to effect five dismissals in a Test match against Australia in Australia.
