Lady luck has miraculous powers and 19-year-old Ashes sensation Ashton Agar can vouch for it. Little wonder then that when the spin debutant slammed his way to a record-breaking 98 against England on Thursday, he blew a kiss to a certain Miss Hay in the stands.
Madeleine Hay - a law student at the University of Western Australia - had a tense day watching her boyfriend come out as the last man of an innings which had crumbled disastrously. According to a report in perthnow.co.au, Madeleine was edgy through the course of Agar's innings but when he did complete an unexpected fifty, it was her jubilation that reverberated the loudest.
Such was the passion of watching her 'special person' create history that Anna DeWinter - wife of Australia bowling coach Ali DeWinter said the tears and ovation were heart-warming. "I had the pleasure of sitting with Madeleine Hay, the lovely girlfriend of Ashton Agar, who has watched every ball with nervous anticipation of this amazing day two survival innings of a young man on a fast track to stardom," she was quoted as saying. "There were tears and a standing ovation on his 50 runs and every run since has been met with a heightened level of awareness that can only be fully felt by a significant other or close family."
In fact, it isn't just Madi who admires Agar for his cricketing skills. Her father Al is also proud of the Australian cricketer who, after his heroics, became a national hero. With Ashes 2013 currently in its nascent stage, it appears that the cheers for Agar and his team - both in England and back home - can only get louder with each passing cricketing day.
