  • Holds a world record for making 774 runs (ave.154.80) in four Tests in his debut series - vs West Indies in West Indies in 1970-71. The only other batsman to register 700 runs or more in a debut series was West Indian, George Headley - 703 at an average of 87.88 against England in four Tests in 1929-30.

  • Jointly shares a world record for most hundreds (4) in a debut series - vs.West Indies in 1970-71. Headley had also recorded four hundreds in his debut series against England (as above).

  • His run-aggregate of 2749 (ave.65.45) in 27 Tests is a record by any batsman against West Indies.

  • His tally of 13 centuries is a record by any batsman against West Indies.

  • One of the two players in Test annals to have recorded a hundred in each innings of a Test match on three occasions - the other being Australia's Ricky Ponting.

  • Only Indian to register a hundred and a double hundred in the same Test - 124 & 220 vs. West Indies at Port of Spain in 1970-71.

  • His 220 at Port of Spain in 1970-71 is a record by an Indian batsman for the highest individual innings in the West Indies.

  • His 221 at The Oval in 1979 is a record by an Indian for the highest individual innings in a Test match in England.
