40.1 OUT! EDGED AND TAKEN! A left-arm spinner dismisses a left-arm batter and after 8 years, Liam Dawson takes a wicket in a Test match! He does a celebratory run around the ground as Old Trafford is beside itself. After all the loud talks to give Dawson a chance amidst England's depleting spin stocks, he has finally got a chance and struck on his 7th delivery on return. Coming to the delivery, his guile has helped him take this wicket. It is a straight delivery, landing just around the fuller length, outside off. Yashasvi Jaiswal got a full stride to try and meet the ball, perhaps playing for the turn, but the ball went on with the arm, took the outside edge and got itself lodged safely into the hands of Harry Brook at first slip. Jaiswal will be disappointed. Not because he missed out on a ton, but because it was not a wicket-taking delivery. Could he have gone with softer hands? Has to depart for 58 and from 94/0, India are now 120/2. 120/2

| KL Rahul | 46 | 98 | 4 | 0 | 46.93 |
30 OUT! EDGED AND TAKEN! Would you believe it? Just out of nowhere, with seemingly nothing much happening, England get a wicket! On a length, outside off, KL Rahul looks to punch it down the ground but just like three balls ago, there is a bit of late away movement on the ball. As a result, Rahul is squared up a touch and the ball flies off the outside edge, straight to Zak Crawley at third slip! So India do get their highest opening stand of the series, but they will have to wait for their first century opening stand. Rahul departs for a patient 46 and INDIA ARE 94/1! 94/1

| Sai Sudharsan | 61 | 151 | 7 | 0 | 40.39 |
73.5 OUT! CAUGHT! Would you believe it? Midas has done it again! After a string of four dot balls, Ben Stokes brings out the surprise bumper and angles it in over the right shoulder of the batter. It is at an awkward height but Sai Sudharsan looks to take it on, only to get a top edge. The ball flies down to fine leg where Brydon Carse comes in, settles himself and takes a safe catch. Sudharsan will be livid with that shot as he departs for a gritty 61 (151) and India are 235/4, effectively 235/5 if Pant's injury is a serious one. 235/4
| Shubman Gill C | 12 | 23 | 1 | 0 | 52.17 |
49.1 OUT! LBW! Midas does it again! Massive misjudgement from the Indian captain as the English captain dismisses him, on just the third ball of their battle, much to the cheer of the crowd. On a length, outside off, Shubman Gill chooses to shoulder arms, expecting the ball to move away. But the ball pitches and jags back in a long way, catching him right in front of the stumps. Stokes pleads, and pleads and pleads, probably hoping that the Ashes battle is not brought into consideration here and after what seems like an age, umpire Rod Tucker relents. England are pumped up and a not-so-confident Gill walks across to his partner and decides to send it upstairs. Height was the only factor in question as no shot was offered and Ball Tracking projects it to be hitting the off stump! Gill departs for 12 and from 94/0, India are now 140/3! 140/3
| Rishabh Pant Wk | 54 | 75 | 3 | 2 | 72 |
112.3 OUT! BOWLED! The 'archer' finds his mark with his bow and arrow and the off stump has gone cartwheeling! Slow, slow and then fast from Jofra and Rishabh Pant gets a reminder of his dismissal in the third Test. Nearly a carbon copy dismissal. Archer keeps this on a length, hits the seam and Pant stays back to defend. But the ball moves away off the seam, beats the outside edge and knocks the off stump off the ground! Archer is pumped up and the crowd rejoice for the moment, but then sportingly applaud Pant off the field for his brave innings. He departs for 54 (75) and from 314/5, India are 349/9! 349/9

| Ravindra Jadeja | 20 | 40 | 3 | 0 | 50 |
84.5 OUT! CAUGHT! Jofra Archer strikes with the second new ball, and the overnight set batter Ravindra Jadeja is gone! Archer bowls it on the good length and keeps the line around the off stump, to make the batter play. It goes and angles across from there. Jadeja tries to defend it but gets squared up and generates an outside edge that travels low towards second slip. Harry Brook remains watchful there as he goes across to his right and plucks this catch with both hands just above the ground. Archer starts to celebrate but Jadeja is not going anywhere. England start to celebrate and the umpires start to get into action to check for a clean catch but Jadeja trusts Brook's words and starts to walk off! This is a big strike, and India are 266/5. Effectively, 6 down. 266/5
| Shardul Thakur | 41 | 88 | 5 | 0 | 46.59 |
101.4 OUT! CAUGHT! Ben Duckett has caught a blinder at gully, and the inning of Shardul Thakur comes to an end. It is that man again, Ben Stokes, who has provided the breakthrough again for England. Stokes bowls on the fuller length and keeps it outside off, gets to find away movement from there and entices the batter for a drive. Thakur, who was looking well set, is drawn forward and goes for a big booming drive, playing this away from his body. The ball catches the outside edge of the bat and flies towards gully, where Duckett flings himself to his left pretty quickly and pouches it around his chest height with both hands. Thakur is gone for 41(88) and India are 314/6. 314/6

| Washington Sundar | 27 | 90 | 2 | 0 | 30 |
109.2 OUT! CAUGHT! Knock, knock! Who is it? Me? Ben Stokes. Oh dear. Wicket time? I guess so. Mr. Midas does it again, for the 4th time in this innings. A short ball, right at head height, Washington Sundar instinctively goes for the hook. He does seem to have connected well and hits the ball high in the air, but the parabolic path is just completed before the ropes can be cleared. Chris Woakes waits patiently at fine leg and takes it calmly. Much similar to the dismissal of Sai Sudharsan by the very same bowler. Sundar departs for a watchful 27 (90) and from 314/5, India are 337/7. 337/7

109.5 OUT! CAUGHT! There it is, Ben Stokes with a fifer! He has bowled his heart out here again after bowling a fantastic spell at Lord's! On a hard length and around off, in the channel, the ball rises furthermore. Anshul Kamboj is caught in two minds whether to leave it or to defend it. He chooses the latter and tries to just block it with soft hands, presenting a straight face of the bat. The ball catches the thin outside edge of the bat as there is no foot movement and goes behind the wickets, where the keeper, Jamie Smith, takes it around his chest height. Stokes has been the best seamer of the English lot and has shown his skills here. India have slipped from a good position of 314/5 to 337/8 and this has been a good period for England post lunch. 337/8

| Jasprit Bumrah | 4 | 7 | 1 | 0 | 57.14 |
114.1 OUT! CAUGHT DOWN THE LEG SIDE! Magnificent review by the combination of Jamie Smith and Joe Root! A bizarre way to end the innings. A length ball, down the leg side, Jasprit Bumrah looked to swing it over fine leg but missed. The keeper, Jamie Smith, appealed for the catch but the umpire said no. The captain was not paying attention, so the former captain, Joe Root, yelled out to Stokes, who is probably somewhere near long on and signalled him to signal for the review. Archer though, shook his head and asked him NOT to go for the review as England had only one left. Stokes, caught in a moment of which friend to trust, goes with his star batter. And guess what - UltraEdge detects a spike as the ball is near the glove! The decision is reversed and INDIA HAVE MADE 358 IN THEIR FIRST INNINGS. 358/10

32 OUT! CAUGHT! That extra ball has worked wonders for India as they get a breakthrough finally and break this monumental 166-run stand. Jadeja has flighted it and pitches it full and around off, enticing the batter to go for it again. Zak Crawley comes forward and looks to drive it but plays it away from his body too. The ball catches the outside edge and goes low towards first slip, where KL Rahul remains alert as he goes low in front of himself and pouches it just above the ground. The square leg umpire refers it upstairs to find out whether it is a clean catch or not. Third umpire is called in and he checks the replays, but before Zak Crawley has started to walk away. The replays were checked from different angles and it is given OUT from upstairs. India find some joy, and all players congratulate Jadeja. 166/1

| Ben Duckett | 94 | 100 | 13 | 0 | 94 |
38.1 OUT! CAUGHT BEHIND! Neither English opener manages to get to his century and Anshul Kamboj gets his MAIDEN WICKET IN TESTS! This has been a better spell from the debutant as compared to his first, although it has seen just 7 balls. But his previous over seemed very promising and he has managed to get a set batter. Fractionally short, outside off, Ben Duckett latches onto the cut but there is extra bounce on this delivery. The lift surprises the left hander and he only manages an outside edge. It flies through to the substitute keeper, Dhruv Jurel, who makes no mistake. Kambhoj is pumped up and just like Crawley, Duckett does not want to go! There is no doubt in this dismissal regarding the carry or anything but just the fact that he came so close to his century, is making him want to stay out there. Probably hoping for a change in decision or luck. He eventually starts to trudge off, for an entertaining 94 (100) and England are 197/2, trailing by 161! 197/2
| Ollie Pope | 71 | 128 | 7 | 0 | 55.46 |
76.1 OUT! EDGED AND TAKEN! 'I told ya, I told ya', Washington Sundar would be saying. We heard Dinesh Karthik saying that it almost felt as if Sundar could dismiss Pope any time. And he does. 15 balls in this innings, 7 runs and eventually, the dismissal. Tossed up, just a touch wide outside off, Ollie Pope lunges to defend but the away drift moves the ball away. Takes the outside edge and goes straight to KL Rahul at first slip, who has to be lauded for not losing his concentration having not seen anything come in his way before this. Takes a sharp catch to his left and the 144-run stand is broken at last. So Pope too, misses out on his century, being dismissed for 71 and England are 341/3, trailing by 17! 341/3
| Joe Root | 150 | 248 | 14 | 0 | 60.48 |
119.2 OUT! STUMPED! A massive breakthrough for India! How many times have we seen a wicket fall right after a Drinks break? It has happened again, and this is the big fish. Ravindra Jadeja floats it up, full and on off, this one grips and turns away sharply. Joe Root gets drawn forward into his defensive stroke. The ball turns past the outside edge and Root loses his balance. Dhruv Jurel, the substitute keeper, collects well and produces a sharp stumping. Rod Tucker asks Root to wait but not sure why as this looks out. The replay shows that Root is well short of his crease. The entire crowd at Old Trafford gives a standing ovation as he raises his bat and helmet to take in all the applause. He departs for a sublime 150, and England lose half their side now. 499/5
| Harry Brook | 3 | 12 | 0 | 0 | 25 |
80.1 OUT! STUMPED! Oh dear... this is one reason why Harry Brook is not picked for Tests in Asia. After being ignored for 68 overs, Sundar has now struck twice in the span of 13 balls. Good bowling, but really poor batting. As expected, coach McCullum would have hinted at Bazball but sadly, forgot to add the terms and conditions - spend some time at the crease first. In England or Australia, the saying usually goes - if you are not able to understand spin, sweep. Brook feels that if he is not able to understand spin, he should use his feet. Jumps out of his crease even before the ball is delivered and Sundar smartly tosses it up a bit wider outside off and the drift assists him too, taking the ball further away from the batter. Brook feels for it but is nowhere near the pitch of the ball. Misses the ball by a mile and the substitute keeper, Dhruv Jurel, does the rest. Brook departs for 3 and from 341/2, England are reduced to 349/4! They still trail by 9 runs. 349/4
| Ben Stokes C | 141 | 198 | 11 | 3 | 71.21 |
155.3 OUT! CAUGHT! Ben Stokes departs, but England haven't declared yet! What's going on in their mind? This is bowled full and flighted, a bit outside off, Stokes gets down on his knees and slogs it downtown again. This time, the ball gets some drift, and he miscues his shot off the bottom end of the bat. The connection isn't that good, and the ball doesn't travel the desired distance. The long on fielder, Sai Sudharsan, runs across to his left there and settles underneath it before taking it low around his knee height. The crowd rises and applauds this amazing, impactful inning of the English skipper, as he goes back for 141 runs off 198 balls. India get some respite but their shoulders are looking down already. 658/9

| Jamie Smith Wk | 9 | 19 | 1 | 0 | 47.36 |
124.1 OUT! CAUGHT BEHIND! At last, after toiling hard for 23 overs, Bumrah gets his first scalp! On the very first ball of a new spell! On a good length, outside off, Jamie Smith pushes at it. He only manages to get a thick outside edge and the ball carries through to the keeper. The substitute keeper, Dhruv Jurel, dives forward for the catch, but strangely, does not react. Bumrah is confused, and clarifies with his keeper whether that carried. Even Rod Tucker is confused as well. Eventually, Jurel signals to everyone that he has taken the catch cleanly but Tucker wants it to be checked upstairs. UltraEdge is checked first, for the edge and it confirms a spike when the ball is near the bat. The replay comes in and shows that the ball has lodged cleanly into the gloves of the keeper. Smith departs for 9 and from 491/4, England are suddenly 515/6, which might also be 7 down, if Stokes does not return. The lead reads 157. 515/6
| Liam Dawson | 26 | 65 | 3 | 0 | 40 |
139.3 OUT! BOWLED! How about inconsistency? Great bowling from Bumrah but nothing much that Dawson could have done there. Boom Boom pitches it slightly fuller than the previous ball and probably, the only mistake Dawson does there, is that he plays it off the back foot. Probably, thinking about what happened on the previous delivery. But while that shot up, this shoots down, goes beneath the bat and crashes into the off stump. Bumrah has looked in excellent rhythm this morning but taking a cue from Ravi Shastri last evening, 'India are 24 hours late'. Dawson departs for a gritty 26 and the 35-run stand is broken. England are 563/8 and lead by 205. 563/8
| Chris Woakes | 4 | 17 | 0 | 0 | 23.52 |
129.1 OUT! BOWLED! Dragged on. This nearly happened in the last over as well. On a length, outside off, nipping back in, Chris Woakes looks to defend but the ball stays low a touch, takes the bottom edge and deflects onto the stumps. First wicket for Siraj, after toiling hard for 24 overs. Woakes departs for 4 and from 491/4, England have slipped down to 528/7! They lead by 170. 528/7
| Brydon Carse | 47 | 54 | 3 | 2 | 87.03 |
157.1 OUT! CAUGHT! No half century for Carse and England's marathon innings is finally over. Full, around middle and leg, Brydon Carse gets down on a knee and looks to play the slog sweep. Seems to have connected well but does not quite have the distance. Mohammed Siraj takes it calmly at deep backward square leg and has some argy-bargy with the crowd, who seems to be having had a go at him. Jadeja is pumped up, as he picks up a 4-wicket haul. ENGLAND END AT 669 AND LEAD BY 311! 669/10

0.4 OUT! EDGED AND TAKEN! This is exactly why India should have tried and avoided taking the last wicket before 5.20 pm IST (1150 GMT). The last 15-20 minutes before a break are extremely difficult for a batter and that too, against a brand new ball, even more so. The near-perfect start for England as they get a wicket in the first over. Almost a replica of the first innings, where there too, in the first over, Jaiswal had got an edge, but on that occasion, it had not carried. On a length, outside off, from around the wicket, coming in, Yashasvi Jaiswal looks to work it to the leg side but the new ball straightens at the last moment, has some zip and squares him up. Takes the leading edge and goes straight to Joe Root at first slip. He shells it, but such is his luck that he manages to grab it in the second attempt! Woakes starts off on a celebratory run while Root manages a hearty laugh. A duck for the half centurion from the first innings and WOAKES NOW HAS THE MOST WICKETS AT ANY VENUE HE HAS BOWLED IN TEST CRICKET! 0/1

70.2 OUT! LBW! No review needed for this one! Stokes does not appeal, Rahul does not wait! A carbon copy of Rahul's dismissal at Lord's. Same bowler as well. Only there, Stokes had reviewed. There was absolutely no point in reviewing this one. It was slightly better than a grubber. On a good length, outside off, KL Rahul stays back to play. But unfortunately for him, the ball jags back in and stays absolutely low, hitting him on the pads. Dead plumb, so plumb that neither the bowler, nor the batter had any second thought. Still, you have got to appeal for the umpire to raise his finger, as Glenn McGrath had found out some 20-odd years ago. So, someone does appeal and umpire Rod Tucker raises his finger. Ball Tracking projects it to be hitting the leg stump. End of a marathon stand of 188 as Rahul departs for a gritty 90. India are 188/3 and trail by 123 runs! 188/3

0.5 OUT! EDGED AND TAKEN! Two in two! And Woakes is on a hattrick! More problems of batting for the break. Indecision on the mind. A short ball, outside off, from around the wicket, Sai Sudharsan is hanging back, probably thinking whether to play at it or let it go. He tries to withdraw his bat at the last moment but is pretty late. The ball has extra bounce, takes the outside edge and flies straight to Harry Brook at second slip. Another duck for the youngster. 0/2

87.4 OUT! CAUGHT BEHIND! And the curse for India before a break continues! This is not the first time that the visitors have lost a wicket with just a few minutes before an interval and more particularly, before Lunch. To memory, it seems like this is the 5th time in this series that India have lost a wicket at the stroke of Lunch. Kudos to Archer for persisting with that short length. He was not on the mark against Sundar but got it right on that occasion. This is what extra pace can do. Jofra bangs it on a length, outside off, probably could have been left alone as an afterthought, but Gill chooses to poke at it. Gets a healthy outside edge to the keeper, Jamie Smith, who makes no mistake. Archer is pumped up and Gill departs for a fabulous 103, to a massive ovation from the crowd. The 34-run stand has been broken and India are 222/4, trailing by 89! 222/4
