Earlier on Day 1, 15-year-old sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi (8) and captain Ishan Kishan (4) fell cheaply as East Zone slumped to 138/5 in the opening session. However, Sudip Kumar Gharami, who scored a brilliant 146, joined forces with Shahbaz to add a crucial 150-run partnership, helping East Zone recover strongly and seize control of the contest.
