Denly out of second Australia ODI

England opener Joe Denly will miss the second One-Day International against Australia at Lord's on Sunday as a result of the football injury he sustained during practice this week.

Kent batsman Denly was ruled out of Friday's series opener here at the Oval after a collision with Owais Shah while taking part playing football, a regular part of the team's warm-up routine, at the south London ground on Thursday.

However, an England and Wales Cricket Board statement said that Denly, who saw a specialist on Friday, had not suffered a severe injury but that it was too early to say what part, if any, the 23-year-old would play in the seven-match series.

"Further assessment of scans have revealed no major structural damage to Joe Denly's injured left knee," the ECB statement said.

It added: "Joe has suffered a small sprain to the knee and will continue to receive treatment over the next 48 hours before undergoing a further assessment early next week which will determine a recovery timescale.

"He has been ruled out of England's second NatWest Series ODI at Lord's on Sunday."

Denly top-scored with 67 on his ODI debut in the three-run win over Ireland in Belfast last Thursday.

His was not the first football-related injury suffered by an England cricketer this season.

Ian Bell sustained an ankle knock in the build-up to the third Ashes Test at Edgbaston and Matt Prior had a back spasm shortly before play in the fourth Test at Headingley.

The one-day series concludes at Durham's Riverside ground on September 20.
