One of the biggest dilemma facing the Indian Test team is who's better suited for Test cricket - Rohit Sharma or Cheteshwar Pujara? (2nd Test preview)
Ask former Australian cricketer Dean Jones, and he finds a way to fit both (Pujara & Rohit) in the playing XI. (Also read: Virat Kohli says Team India ready to bounce back)
"I would get Pujara to open with Murali Vijay and drop KL Rahul," he told NDTV on the eve of the 2nd Test between Sri Lanka and India, on Wednesday.
Remind Jones about Rahul's century in Sydney, in just his second Test, and he retorts, "Rahul's defence hasn't been good enough according to me. Yes, he's made a hundred but his defense has been poor"
Former India opener Sunil Gavaskar concurs. "That's not a bad idea. Pujara is a solid player, the kind of player you need when the ball is moving around and the pitch is difficult to play," he said.
However, Pujara's recent record in Test matches leaves much to be desired. The Gujarat batsman averages 24 in his last 20 innings.
But, Gavaskar feels that's a thing of the past, "With his (Pujara) recent experience in English County cricket, he might be the man to bat at the top of the order," he said.
With Pujara replacing Rahul, both Jones and Gavaskar felt Rohit Sharma could come in handy batting lower down the order.
