Challenge is to lessen the gap between good and ordinary: George Bailey

Sitting pretty at the top of the table with two wins from as many matches in the ICC World Twenty20, Australia skipper George Bailey on Saturday indicated that the team still needed to improve in certain areas.

Australia defeated the West Indies by 17 runs via the Duckworth-Lewis method after heavy rain stopped play in the Group B encounter at the R Premadasa Stadium.

"There was some great stuff and there was some very ordinary stuff as well," said Bailey.

"That's what the challenge is, to lessen the gap between the good and the ordinary stuff. We did do that in patches, but there were certainly patches when they got away from us," he added.

He had a word of praise for the top-order that included Shane Watson, David Warner and Michael Hussey.

"They set up a great foundation. Watson and Warner did the job, Huss was good too. Disappointed with the rain, (though), because an exciting finish was set up."

West Indies captain Darren Sammy felt that his team took a little too long to respond to Australia's attacking riposte in pursuit of 192.

"Everybody was looking forward to it. The batsmen did what was required of them. We knew Australia would come back hard, and we took too long to respond," Sammy said.

Asked about Chris Gayle's attacking batsmanship, he said, "Just the way he goes about his innings, we just sit in the dressing room, and just enjoy watching him play."

Going back to his bowlers' efforts, he said, "Edwards started well, but like I said we took too long to respond."

Sammy was sad that the "weather took away a very exciting game".

Man of the Match Shane Watson attributed his success to opening partner Warner.

"It was great to watch Warner from the other end. He took the pressure off me. That's the thing about our partnership. One day is his day, the next one can be mine.

"Hussey the came in and batted beautifully."

Watson, though, expressed his disappointment at letting the West Indies batsmen off the hook.

"It was a good day in the end. Obviously disappointing to let them score 190. Dropping Gayle was a pretty bad feeling, especially when the next 10 balls go for 30 runs. So good to make up for it with the ball and the bat," he said.
