New Delhi:
"The BCCI has decided to discontinue the services of bowling coach Venkatesh Prasad and fielding coach Robin Singh with immediate effect," said a brief statement from Board secretary N Srinivasan.
Although the Board's decision to sack them came as a surprise, both Prasad and Singh were under the scanner after India's dismal show in the World Twenty20 and last month's Champions Trophy.
Top Indian bowlers like Ishant Sharma and RP Singh have struggled for form for long spells with the latter being dropped from the ODI squad for the seven-match ODI series against Australia on Thursday.
Prasad, represented India in 33 Tests and 161 ODIs, and was appointed as the bowling coach in May 2007, while Robin Singh took over as the fielding coach at the same time as Prasad.
A terse one liner from the BCCI says their services have been terminated as bowling and fielding coach respectively. No doubt the team has had troubles with fielding and bowling lately but many felt that Robin and Prasad were doing a fairly good job.
Ironically, neither of them had a formal contract with the BCCI despite being with the team since the T20 World Cup in 2007.
BCCI sources have told NDTV that they were not happy with Robin and Prasad having IPL contracts. Robin had recently signed on with Mumbai Indians, while Prasad switched from Bangalore Royal Challengers to Chennai Super Kings.
Meanwhile, Venkatesh Prasad told NDTV that he is disappointed and hurt. He also said he was working sincerely for Indian cricket even though there was never any formal contract with the BCCI.
