Australia thrash Pak to clinch Hong Kong Sixes trophy

David Warner led from the front with a destructive cameo as Australia beat Pakistan by two wickets to clinch their first ever Hong Kong Super Sixes cricket trophy.

Chasing an imposing 132 for six set by Pakistan in their allotted five overs, the Aussies smashed 48 runs from the final eight-ball over of Imran Nazir.

Warner (35 off 11 balls), Glenn Maxwell (34 off 15 balls) and Ryan Carters (31 off eight balls) guided the Aussies home on Sunday with two wickets to spare, Cricket Australia said in a statement.

After the match Warner said he was ecstatic with the win and the way the team never gave up in any situation.

"It was amazing. We have that Australian passion when things are against us. It is one of those things; we needed 46 in that last over, but it is cricket and we knew we always had a chance if we backed ourselves," the captain said.

"We fought back hard in the field. We knew our fielding was going to be the key and today was unbelievable," he added.

Earlier, Pakistan opener Ahmed Shehzad set the scoreboard rocking with a quick-fire 92 of just 28 balls as the tournament favourites amassed a challenging total.

After suffering a loss against South Africa in their opening round match on Saturday Australia came back well to register wins against Hong Kong and England in the group stage before knocking Sri Lanka out in the semi-final.

Glenn Maxwell was named player of the tournament winning the Ben Hollioake Trophy.
