Australian debutant Ashton Agar was brought into the side for this spin but the 19-year-old stunned England by smashing his way to a 101-ball 98.
Coming to the middle with his side in dire straits - 117/9 to be precise - Agar made his intentions clear when he hit Anderson to the fence.
The barrage of boundaries took the home supporters by surprise. One of the most surprised though was Graeme Swann who was smashed beyond the boundary ropes by Agar once each in two successive overs.
Agar was relentless in his attack and completed an unexpected half-century off just 50 deliveries with seven boundaries.
There was hardly stopping the Melbourne lad who had put on hold plans to study law so that he could further his cricket career.
Agar surpassed West Indies' Tino Best (95) as the highest No. 11 Test scorer. But just when he looked like reaching the three-figure mark, Agar's pull off Stuart Broad found Swann at mid-wicket.
