London:
England, after losing the toss, were 101 for two when rain stopped play at 2:30pm local time (1330GMT) in the first one-day international against Sri Lanka at The Oval on Thursday. (Scorecard)
After Ian Bell was dismissed for 50, caught at short fine leg by Lasith Malinga off Sri Lanka captain Angelo Mathews, the umpires took the players off the field after 20.4 overs.
Gary Ballance was 37 not out, with the new batsman yet to reach the crease, after England captain Alastair Cook had been caught behind for 11.
Driving rain and wind falling from overcast skies left the ground staff struggling to secure the covers and a lengthy stoppage in this day/night clash looked likely.
This is the first of a five-match series.
