Carson, California:
Throwing out her pride along with 10 double faults, Lindsay Davenport's comeback ended with a 6-7 (4), 6-4, 6-3 loss to Australian Samantha Stosur in the JP Morgan Chase Open on Wednesday.
Out since March because of a back injury, Davenport battled her own errors and lack of fitness in her first tournament since Indian Wells.
She started hitting balls in early July at the urging of her husband, without a specific comeback date in mind. But the lure of playing the hometown tournament she's won four times brought out Davenport.
"Three weeks just wasn't enough time," she said. "I kind of thought that coming in here, but I felt a strong desire to play here, so that overrode the pride factor."
It was Davenport's earliest tournament exit in three-and-half-years, since a second-round loss to Ai Sugiyama in Scottsdale, Arizona in February 2003.
Meanwhile, Serena Williams continued her comeback, beating fellow American Ashley Harkleroad 6-3, 6-2 in a second-round match that was nearly as easy as her straight-sets victory over 11th-seeded Maria Kirilenko of Russia on Tuesday.
Ranked 110th, Williams is playing her second tournament since mid-January after a knee injury. Her next opponent will be seventh-seeded Daniela Hantuchova of Slovakia, a 7-6 (2), 6-2 winner over Lisa Raymond.
Hantuchova hit eight aces and improved her record against Raymond to 3-1.
A top-five player three years ago, Hantuchova has run hot and cold this year because of illness and injury, and the Slovak has saved her best efforts for the Grand Slams, where she's made it to the round of 16 in all three.
Williams lost to Hantuchova in the Australian Open in January, and then didn't play again until Cincinnati last month.
In other matches, sixth-seeded Anna-Lena Groenefeld of Germany broke Akiko Morogami of Japan twice in each set en route to a 6-3, 6-2 win.
Ana Ivanovic of Serbia fired 13 aces in beating Mara Santangelo of Italy 7-6 (4), 7-5, Shahar Peer of Israel defeated Paola Suarez of Argentina 6-2, 6-3 and will meet third-seeded Elena Dementieva next, and Marion Bartoli of France dispatched Jill Craybas of the United States 6-2, 6-0.
Also, American Meghann Shaughnessy beat Russia's Elena Vesnina 7-6 (4), 6-3. (AP)
