Tokyo:
American Monica Seles recovered from a slow start to defeat compatriot Chanda Rubin in the semifinals of the $1.3 million Toray Pan Pacific tennis tournament.
Top-seeded Seles jumped out to a 4-1 lead in the first set at Tokyo Metropolitan Gymnasium only to see No. 4 Rubin claw her way back to win the set 6-4. But Seles turned her game around and rallied for the 4-6, 6-4, 6-2 victory.
Seles will face compatriot Lindsay Davenport. The third seed, the winner in 1998 and 2001, beat Lisa Raymond, her "best friend on the tour" and her doubles partner, 3-6, 6-1, 6-4, sealing the match with her 13th ace of the day.
The Toray is Asia's only top-tier tournament and Seles will be looking for her first title since the 2000 Italian Open. (AP)
