Paris:
The fifth-seeded Gonzalez had been in good form, reaching the Italian Open final earlier this month, where he lost to Rafael Nadal.
"I was playing very well until now," Gonzalez said. "That's why I'm very, very disappointed."
A quarterfinalist at Roland Garros in 2003, Gonzalez was beaten in the first round the following year, and again at the Australian Open in 2006.
He was surprised at how well Stepanek played.
"He was a lot better than me," Gonzalez said. "It was not my best day, but I was not expecting him to play like that, because he's not a clay-court player."
