Heineken Open: Carlsen, Canas advance

Kenneth Carlsen, Davide Sanguinetti and Guillermo Canas have advanced to the second round of the Heineken Open.

Shanghai: Kenneth Carlsen of Denmark, Italy's Davide Sanguinetti and number three seed Guillermo Canas of Spain all progressed to the second round of the $380-thousand Heineken Open in Shanghai on Monday, all of them in straight sets. Carlsen disposed of Jan Hernych of the Czech Republic 7-5, 6-1, Sanguinetti beat Bohdan Ulihrach for the first time in seven attempts 6-3, 6-3 and Canas defeated his Spanish compatriot Guillermo Garcia-Lopez 7-6, 6-3. Top seed Juan Carlos Ferrero withdrew on Sunday through injury, leaving reigning champion Mark Philippoussis of Australia the highest ranked player in the top half of the draw. (AP)
