Guillermo Canas defeated French Open champion Gaston Gaudio to win the Mercedes Cup.

Stuttgart: Guillermo Canas picked up his fourth career title, but needed five sets and 3 hours, 40 minutes to down French Open champion Gaston Gaudio at the Mercedes Cup. The unseeded Argentine held on to oust his countryman 5-7, 6-2, 6-0, 1-6, 6-3 on Sunday. Canas, who missed most of last year with two wrist operations, trailed 0-2 in the final set, then rattled off the next four games. While dropping the third set 0-6, Gaudio seemed exhausted and didn't contest many points. He recovered and claimed the fourth set easily, breaking Canas' serve in the first game. That set up a decisive final set which lasted nearly an hour as the two players slugged it out from the baseline. Canas won for the first time since the 2002 Masters Series event in Toronto, the biggest title of his career. Canas lost the Mercedes Cup final in 2001 to Gustavo Kuerten and lost the following year to Mikhail Youzhny. (AP)
