Indian women weightlifters put up a creditable show with Soniya Chanu finishing sixth in the 48kg category on the opening day of the World Championships in Paris.
Soniya Chanu and Sanjita Chanu both competed in the in 48 kg weight category. While Soniya finished sixth with a lift of 171kg (75 kg+96kg), Sanjitha ended 12th with a tally of 161kg (71kg+90kg). The Championship is also an Olympic qualifying event and the Indian Weightlifting Federation said the duo did well to accumulate points.
"Indian women team performed fairly well by accumulating valuable points on the opening day," IWF Secretary General Sahdev Yadav said.
