The odds are clearly stacking up against MS Dhoni's Pune. There has been nothing gigantic about their performance and the team has been crippled by injuries to two key players - Kevin Pietersen and Faf du Plessis. More than KP, du Plessis will be missed as he was the team's second highest run scorer after Ajinkya Rahane.
With four points from six games, Pune are sixth in the standings. GL top the eight-team table with 10 points from as many games. Friday's game will be a grudge game of sorts for Dhoni's weakened side. The Lions had beaten Pune by seven wickets when they met on April 14 in Rajkot.
Rahane and Dhoni will have to shoulder more responsibility for RPS from now on. This is the time for Australian skipper Steven Smith to put his hand up an get counted. Suresh Raina's Lions will only have to guard against complacency.
