Both Kolkata Knight Riders and Kings XI Punjab will approach Wednesday's match at the Eden Gardens with a lot of confidence. In their last match, KKR chased down Royal Challengers Bangalore's imposing 185 to win with five wickets and five balls to spare.
Yusuf Pathan and Andre Russell produced a match-winning 96-run stand for the fifth wicket after KKR had slumped to 69 for 4 in the 11th over. The win only highlighted the versatility of Gautam Gambhir's KKR squad.
It's been a poor season for Kings XI Punjab so far. With just four points from seven matches, KXIP have hardly played like kings. A change of captaincy brought KXIP luck and an unexpected win against IPL 2016 pacesetters Gujarat Lions in Rajkot on Sunday.
Murali Vijay celebrated his appointment as KXIP captain with a 41-ball 55. David Miller, who lost his captaincy to Vijay, showed welcome signs of form with a 27-ball 31. But the hero of KXIP's win was Axar Patel.
It was Axar's 4 for 21, that included the first hattrick of the season, broke the back of Gujarat Lions' batting. KXIP won by 23 runs. KKR will do well not to take KXIP lightly after this.
