Set a target of 243 runs, India coasted to the win in 44.1 overs, winning with 35 balls to spare.
Opener Shikhar Dhawan played a stellar knock (91) and forged useful partnerships with Ajinkya Rahane (31) and Ambati Rayadu (35) to lead India to victory. Skipper Virat Kohli also contributed with a solid 53.
Earlier, Sri Lanka were bowled out for 242 in 48.2 overs despite veteran batsman Mahela Jayawardene scoring a superb century (118 off 124 balls).
Pacer Umesh Yadav (4/53) wrecked Sri Lanka's top order to help set up India's triumph.

There were some personal milestones in today's match. Mahela Jayawardene crossed the 12K runs mark in ODIs and Virat Kohli crossed the 6K one, becoming the quickest batsman to reach that feat.
Man of the Match - Mahela Jayawardene. He's a bit disappointed but happy with the performance overall. He is surprised to get this award. He adds India put them into early trouble and after that they just were left to do the repair work. He hopes they come back harder and play for pride in the next two games.
Dhawan failed to get a ton today again as he was out for 91. Virat Kohli chipped in with a crucial fifty as well and India made sure they don't slip further, completing a comprehensive victory. Sri Lanka used 8 bowlers but only 3 of them were successful.
Three matches, three wins for India = series sealed. The Sri Lankans aren't offering any fight against India as they lose yet another series here. First India restricted them to a decent total today and then chased down without any difficulty. Rahane and Dhawan gave a good start and then Rayudu was run out for 35.
