England wicket-keeper Ben Foakes' attempted stumping against India cricketer Jasprit Bumrah during the first Test match in Hyderabad has sparked a massive outrage on social media. Bumrah tried to play a delivery from Tom Hartley but was not able to make any connection as Foakes collected it behind the stumps. Bumrah jumped slightly in what seemed out of frustration but Foakes quickly dislodged the stumps and appealed for a stumping. While the third umpire ruled that Bumrah was back inside the crease, the whole act has resulted in a massive 'Spirit of Cricket' controversy with many social media users mentioning Australia wicketkeeper Alex Carey's stumping of Jonny Bairstow during the Ashes 2023 series which also resulted in a massive debate among cricket fans and experts.
A penny for Jonny Bairstow and Brendon McCullum's thoughts on trying to win a game with this? #INDvENG pic.twitter.com/JaZW9B88eV

Meanwhile, Indian cricket team fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah was reprimanded by the International Cricket Council Monday for "inappropriate physical contact" with England's Ollie Pope during the home team's 28-run Test defeat this weekend.
@WG_RumblePants just wondering what the difference is between Foakes' attempted stumping and Careys v Bairstow? Bumrah jumped in the air from frustration, there was no attempt for a run pic.twitter.com/q9uA4TPJaE

The incident occurred during England's second innings when Bumrah, after bowling and completing his follow-through, "deliberately stepped in Ollie Pope's way as the batter went for a run, leading to inappropriate physical contact", the ICC said in a statement.
The English team did spot Bumrah hopping a little and converted it into a stumping ploy. Foakes was slightly late in completing it. It could have caused a controversial end. pic.twitter.com/FFwINJOPLY

Pope's match-winning 196 handed India only its fourth loss in their last 47 Tests at home since 2013 -- but the hosts still remain favourites in the five-match series after losing the first Test.

‘Spirit of the Game'?
If the shoe was on the foot, and had batter got out, we would be having the spirit of the game conversation for sure!!! @piersmorgan @bhogleharsha @KP24 @vikrantgupta73 @NikhilNaz pic.twitter.com/Z7h6X8adwF
Bumrah had been reprimanded for breaching the ICC code and had "admitted the offence and accepted the sanction" with one demerit point added to his disciplinary record, cricket's apex body said.
The ICC code relates to "inappropriate physical contact" with a player, umpire, spectator or any other person during a match.
These breaches carry a minimum penalty of an official reprimand, a maximum penalty of 50 percent of a player's match fee, and one or two demerit points.Â
