India had nearly missed out on the medal chances in the Sultan Azlan Shah Cup, but thanks to the hat-trick scored by Nikkin Thimmaiah, not only did India seal their chances in the medal-playoff, but they also beat the defending champions and the unbeatable team in the tournament, the Australians.(India Stun Aussies 4-2)
"Australia is number one in the world in the present ranking. Beating them in this tournament is really great for us. We wanted to play for in the bronze medal match and were looking to win this one," Nikkin said after the India-Australia match.
"We had defeated them in the Test series last year. So, we always had a thought that we could beat the world number one. So, all of us put in our efforts and it was the team effort that won us the match."
Against the Kookaburras, India was off to an attacking spree right from the beginning. The first penalty corner came in the first minute itself, which V.R. Raghunath tactfully placed it in the nets. After that, it was Nikkin's day out who went on creating good moves and scoring three goals in the 23rd, 32nd and the 60th minute.
"It is undoubtedly my best moment in Azlan Shah. I am on cloud nine now because it is really special to score against Australia. I am enjoying the moment right now. In fact, Australian player Jamie Dwyer is one of my favourite players. Playing against him and scoring three goals makes it more special," he added.
India will face a stern test against the South Koreans tomorrow (April 12), when they play against them on for the bronze medal play-off.
"It will be two tough matches in two days. But that is what hockey is all about. So, we don't really take any pressure. We will do what we are supposed to and hopefully win that match as well."
