London:
Tottenham was held to a 0-0 draw by Premier League newcomer Norwich, spurning the chance to go third in the standings behind fellow London clubs Arsenal and Chelsea.
Spurs, which had three players in England's 2-1 World Cup win over Poland on Wednesday, have yet to lose in five games this season. But it stays sixth after its third draw.
Norwich has yet to win since winning promotion to the Premier League and stays in 17th place. Goalkeeper Robert Green had a standout match.
"At the start of the day, we'd have taken a point, but we had some chances to win it," Green said. "It wasn't like it was a completely one-sided game."
Tottenham striker Jermain Defoe, who scored for England on Wednesday, had several chances, drilling one shot into the post and being denied by a late clearance by Norwich's Youssef Safri.
'Busy goalkeeper'
Green's best save denied Robbie Keane in the second half. "Greenie's had a great game today," Tottenham goalkeeper Paul Robinson said.
"He's had more to do, been the busier goalkeeper. Down at the other end, you can only applaud saves like that."
Robinson said the draw was a point dropped. "They are the type of games we should be winning," he said.
Norwich's Gary Doherty, signed from Spurs last month, had a header saved by Robinson, who replaced David James in goal for England on Wednesday.
Spurs defender Ledley King produced a fine tackle to clear a Darren Huckerby shot.
Arsenal unbeaten
Arsenal is the only team with a 100 per cent record after Chelsea drew 0-0 with Aston Villa on Saturday.
Arsenal's 3-0 win over Fulham stretched its unbeaten league streak to 45 games. Freddie Ljungberg's two second-half goals - and another from Jose Antonio Reyes - made the difference at Craven Cottage.
Arsenal improved to 5-0, jumping into a two-point lead ahead of Chelsea which saw its perfect record soiled at Aston Villa. Arsenal has 15 points with Chelsea on 13, followed by Bolton, Middlesbrough and Everton - all with 10.
Manchester United continued its sputtering start, settling for a 2-2 draw at Bolton to fall nine points behind Arsenal after only five matches. Injury-plagued United has only one win from its first five games.
United was lucky to earn the draw, with Alan Smith getting a second-half injury-time equalizer. His goal came just seconds after Les Ferdinand gave Bolton a late 2-1 lead.
Asked how it felt to be nine points behind so early in the season, Ferguson replied: "You don't enjoy it. I know that we'll get better. There's no question about that. Being 1-nil up at halftime, we expected to show more authority."
Newcastle hammered Blackburn 3-0. The victory came just days after Blackburn manager Graeme Souness announced he was leaving the team to take over at Newcastle.
Souness watched from the stands and will take over officially today.
In the Football League Championship yesterday, Ipswich beat Millwall 2-0 to go top of the standings. Wigan is one point behind after a 3-3 draw at Wolverhampton on Saturday. Stoke, third with 14 points, lost 3-0 at Preston. (AP)
