London:
Champions Manchester United lost ground while Sunderland ended a 28-year wait for a home win over Newcastle. But the stars of the show were again Hull, who in their first season in the top flight, won 3-0 at West Bromwich Albion on Saturday night to join the top two Chelsea and Liverpool on 20 points, thanks to goals from Kamil Zayatte, Geovanni and Marlon King.
United are still five points back in fifth after they were held to a 1-1 draw at Everton.
West Brom held Hull until just after half-time and it took a stunning volley by Zayatte to break the deadlock two minutes into the second half.
Geovanni headed the second in the 62nd minutes and King completed the victory with the third four minutes later.
"We rode our luck in the first 15 minutes and that happens when you are flying high," Hull manager Phil Brown said.
"In the last 15 minutes before the break we started to get our game together. It is our third clean sheet on the bounce and that give us the foundation to win games.
"We have had a dream start with 20 points and if we repeat that in the next 10 games then I will be a happy man."
At Goodison Park, Darren Fletcher put Manchester United in front on 22 minutes but Marouane Fellaini headed the equaliser for Everton with just under half an hour to go to give the home side a share of the spoils.
United completely dominated Everton in terms of possession, especially in the first half, but were made to pay for not taking their chances on a blustery day.
The visitors began well and Fletcher gave them the lead midway through the first half, finishing off a lovely one-touch move.
United fans thought that might be the cue for the floodgates to open but they could not find the second and Fellaini rose at the far post to head the equaliser midway through the second half.
Yakubu almost put Everton in front but Edwin van der Sar pushed his shot onto the post, while Cristiano Ronaldo flashed a shot just wide late on, before Everton survived four minutes of added time to earn a point that moves them up to 13th place.
United manager Sir Alex Ferguson had to pull off Wayne Rooney to avoid him being sent off.
"The crowd were reacting, I did feel he might get sent off so I had to take him off," Ferguson said.
"I just didn't think the referee was giving our players proper protection, I saw some bad tackles and it is the referee's job to protect players.
"I don't know why he (Rooney) was booked and I had fears about the referee."
Sunderland beat Newcastle on home soil for the first time in 28 years thanks to a 2-1 win at the Stadium of Light.
Djibril Cisse put the home side in front, deflecting Steed Malbranque's mis-hit shot into the net but Shola Ameobi equalised with a header in the 30th minute.
But Sunderland were the better side throughout and a stunning free-kick by Kieron Richardson midway through the second half sent the home side wild.
"It's been a long time to wait but I think we deserved it," Sunderland manager Roy Keane said.
"We had the best opportunities. They had one good chance in the second half but I thought we edged it."
Middlesbrough were denied a victory at Blackburn Rovers by a late, late goal from Benni McCarthy.
Afonso Alves had appeared to have won it for Boro when he scored 16 minutes from time, but McCarthy pounced four minutes into time added on to grab a share of the spoils.
