Montevideo:
Australia's international soccer team arrived in Montevideo on Wednesday to a hostile reception. At present the Aussies are 1-0 against Uruguay after the first leg of their crucial World Cup play-off last Tuesday.
Australia aims to become the 32nd and final team to qualify for Japan and South Korea next summer. The team arrived to a hostile reception as about 50 Uruguayan fans crowded around them at the airport.
The team had to be escorted out to safety in the midst of scuffling between local reporters, security service agents, policemen and cameramen.
Australian coach Frank Farina, Leeds United striker Mark Viduka and Middlesbrough goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer were all jostled and abused as they made the short journey to the team bus.
No arrests have yet been reported after what was obviously a premeditated reception aimed at unsettling the visitors.
