India opener Yashasvi Jaiswal was involved in a heated altercation with Sri Lanka pacer Asitha Fernando that nearly turned physical on Day 1 of the ongoing second Test in Colombo. The incident occurred during the first session after Fernando dismissed Jaiswal for 45, denying the left-hander a half-century. As Jaiswal began walking back to the dressing room, he suddenly turned around and confronted Fernando, who was celebrating the wicket with his teammates. The exchange quickly escalated, with the two players exchanging words and moving aggressively towards each other.
Jaiswal and Fernando appeared to go head-to-head before being separated by other Sri Lankan players and the on-field officials.
Devdutt Padikkal, the other Indian batter at the crease, tried to persuade Jaiswal to walk back to the dressing room. However, the opener continued to march towards Fernando as tensions flared in the middle.
Jaiswal, however, could be at risk of a major sanction after appearing to make head contact with Fernando during the altercation.
If the incident is deemed a serious breach of the MCC Code of Conduct, the India opener could face disciplinary action.
He could be banned for either five Tests, 10 ODIs or even receive a lifetime ban if found guilty of a Level 4 breach.
Severe acts of violence, threats or abuse against players, match officials or spectators fall under Level 4 breaches.
For the uninitiated, this is not the first time Jaiswal has been involved in a heated altercation.
During the 2022 Duleep Trophy, Jaiswal clashed with South Zone's T Ravi Teja despite repeated warnings from the umpire.
However, West Zone captain Ajinkya Rahane intervened and sent Jaiswal back to the dressing room before the matter could escalate further.
