Watson relishing opener's position

His star rising recently with crucial contributions for the team, Australian all-rounder Shane Watson says he wants to continue in the opener's slot rather than batting in the middle order.

Watson, who hit his maiden Test hundred in the first Test against Pakistan at the MCG at the top of order, said he relishes his new job as opener and wants to cement his place by scoring heavily.

"My main job now is definitely as an opener, there's no doubt. I definitely see myself more as a batsman at the moment because of the role I'm playing in the team. The most important thing for me is to go out there and score runs and set up the innings for the team," said Watson.

"My bowling's balancing things out nicely. Ricky's been using me very nicely. I didn't need to bowl in the second innings which means I can freshen up going into this Test," he was quoted as saying by 'The Australian'.

Along with Simon Katich, Watson has struck up a bountiful partnership since facing the new ball together in the third Ashes Test against England in July last year.

In the seven Tests and 12 innings since then, the pair have belted 856 runs at an average of 71.33, and Watson feels he has found a reliable partner at the top in Katich.

"Every time you go out we continue to grow and develop as an opening pair. We've got a very good rapport. But being in an opening batting combination is something very unique to me.

It's something I haven't experienced before," the 28-year-old right-hand batsman said.
