The bid for Pollard went into the tiebreaker after 4 teams tied for him at the maximum $750,000. With this he became more expensive than Englishmen Andrew Flintoff and Kevin Pietersen.
Pollard had a base price of $200,000. He was the second player to come under the hammer at today's IPL auction for season 3. The first, Pakistan's T20 captain, Shahid Afridi went unsold.
Later, team owner Neeta Ambani clarified Pollard's selection. "It was a team strategy between Sachin, Shekar and Robin (Singh). We wanted a batting all-rounder in our team so we're happy to have him
The teams that lost out in their bid for Pollard were Kolkata, Chennai and Bangalore.
Sources say the other tie-break man, Kiwi Shane Bond was bought by Kolkata Knight Riders for $1.3 million.
Both Bond and Pollard will pocket $750,000 each, with the rest going into the IPL kitty.
