Pak committee takes up issue of match-fixing with ICC

Karachi:

Chairman of Pakistan's Senate Standing Committee on sports, Ghaffar Qureshi, claims to have contacted the ICC to discuss allegations of match-fixing in Pakistan cricket.

But Qureshi didn't elaborate whether the Senate committee got in touch with the ICC directly or through the Pakistan Cricket Board.

Members of the Senate committee had said after a meeting with PCB officials in early June that they were shown video recordings that indicated that the menace of match fixing existed in Pakistan cricket.

But PCB Chairman Ijaz Butt strongly denied this and said the Senators have made wrong assumptions and no Pakistani player was involved in match-fixing.

The Senate committee then decided to contact the ICC anti-corruption and security cell to get more details on this issue.

Qureshi said that the Senate committee would be meeting in the third week of July where he would brief the members about the progress made in the contacts made with the ICC.

"I can't give out details right now because I want to brief the Senate committee members first and then we will talk to the media," Qureshi said.

He said the meeting of the Senate committee would also look into the issue of why the board was constantly refusing to consider Younus Khan for selection in the national team despite the fact that there was no ban on him now.

"Why is only Younus being victimised by the PCB we want to know and this Senate committee will be also looking into details of the budget announced by the board this week," he said.
