New Zealand gave India a taste of their own medicine on Day 1 of the Kanpur Test on Thursday. This was the sixth time that the Kiwis played three spinners in a Test match. Mitchell Santner (left-arm spin), Mark Craig (off-spin) and Ish Sodhi (leg-spin) bowled 59 overs among them and took five of the nine Indian wickets to fall at Green Park.
Virat Kohli has opted to play India's 500th Test match with four specialist bowlers. NDTV expert Sunil Gavaskar had said in his pre-match analysis that India must play three spinners (Amit Mishra being the third). Gavaskar feels Ashwin and Jadeja will have to take the initiative to deny the Kiwis big partnerships.
Both Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja have the credentials to keep India in the game. Since the start of 2013, Ashwin (72 wickets) has taken 50 per cent of India's wickets at home. Jadeja (47 wickets) is next best.
Friday should see a good contest between bat and ball. India start at their overnight score of 291/9. If they can cross the 300-mark, it will give them a slight psychological edge against Kane Williamson's side.
