Dale Steyn In Doubt For Second Test Due to Shoulder Injury

The top-ranked test bowler will need more tests on what South Africa team manager Mohammed Moosajee called a right shoulder "spasm" to decide if he is fit to play in the second test in Cape Town starting on Saturday.

The doubts over Steyn's fitness added to the problems for the Proteas, who trailed England by 261 runs ahead of the fourth day of the series opener at Kingsmead and were facing a struggle to save the game.

Steyn didn't take to the field on Tuesday morning and in his absence England continued to build a big lead and was well-placed to take a series lead to Cape Town.

On Monday, team manager Moosajee attributed Steyn's shoulder problem to the quick bowler's heavy workload on the first day at Kingsmead following a six-week layoff for a groin injury.

"There was no tears to the muscles or the tendons or the ligaments so we're treating it more as a shoulder spasm," Moosajee said.

Steyn slumped over holding his bowling arm early in England's second innings and left the field for treatment. He returned later and tried to bowl again, and again pulled up injured.
