Reverse Bidding to Woo New Investors?
The Cricket Board is mulling a "reverse bidding" process to include the new IPL teams for a period of two years only. The model adopted has to be a win-win one for both the BCCI and the new team owners. A final decision will be taken at the BCCI's annual general meeting on November 9.
The classical definition of reverse bidding or reverse auction states: "In a reverse auction, the buyer puts up a request for a required good or service. Sellers then place bids for the amount they are willing to be paid for the good or service, and at the end of the auction the seller with the lowest amount wins."
During reverse bidding, an investor who bids the lowest amount, will be owner of a team. For example, if BCCI plans to pump in 70 crore, a potential investor can buy a team bidding at Rs 50 crore, 40 crore or 30 crore depending on the lowest.
According to an agreement with host broadcasters, Sony Entertainment Television, eight teams are mandatory to have a tournament. It is not clear whether IPL will be a 10-team affair when Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals return after serving their suspension.
