Consistency. That is the first word that comes to mind when one mentions Rahul Dravid's name. Solid technique. That is the second word to describe Dravid for his cricket. In his 16-year playing career, Dravid was one of the lynchpins in the Indian middle order, alongside the likes of Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly and VVS Laxman. When Dravid retired, the cricketing world lost one of the most classiest batsman in the modern era. With 13288 runs in Tests and 10889 runs in ODIs, the void that he left was massive. Although it is too premature to compare, Dravid's torch is seemingly being carried forward by his nine-year old son, Samit in the ongoing U-12 Gopalan Cricket Challenge Cup in Bangalore. Samit's first major contribution in the tournament came in the match against New Horizon Public School. Playing for Mallya Aditi International School, Samit scored 77 and shared a 114-run partnership to boost his team to 210 in 16 overs. In that knock, he followed his father's blueprint that had given him immense success - build partnerships. Mallya Aditi won the match by a big margin of 114 runs.
Dravid Jr went one better in the next match. Against Delhi Public School (Whitefield), he smashed 93 and helped his team to 168/3 in 16 overs. Mallya Aditi won the match by 62 runs to give them their second consecutive win.
In both matches, Samit showed all the traits which made his father one of the best batsmen during his time. He displayed a mature head, shared vital partnerships and contributed when the team needed it the most.
At such a tender age, Samit has made a good start and probably laid the first brick to building a solid wall!
